We had a great time with volunteers from the U.S Navy, LCS MCM DET 4 from San Diego, California. They contacted the NASFL Museum with their wish to volunteer for a day. They're visiting Rivera Beach, Florida for training. They drove to Fort Lauderdale to spend their free afternoon, helping us with landscaping, painting, and preservation projects. It was a pleasure and an honor to meet such hardworking and fine members of the Navy!
Our deepest appreciation to: Brian E. Neal MN2 (SW) Brandon Adams, MN2 Chris Yates, MNI (SW) Richard Sorrell, MNI (SW) Rafael Amorim, ENI (SW/EXW/SCW) Camaryn Camacho, MN2 Jesse Conrad, ENC (SW/EXW) Keon Jackson, MNCS(SW) Richard Weinert, MNC (SW) James Hofius, MNI (SW) Thank you to CAPT Scott Hahn, CAPT Stephen Schaffer, Mike Clark and Bruce Fuchs, United States Navy Reserve. They volunteer at the Museum for their Navy Heritage Project. This month they helped us by temporarily arranging Memorial Bricks around the main flag pole. The memorial bricks will be eventually placed along the Flight 19 Memorial Monument. More and more bricks are being ordered. Order your own memorial brick and help the NASFL Museum ! Navy Heritage Project organized materials, created space in the attic, and also refreshed the flags on the Museum's flag pole, with a new American flag and a Navy flag that CAPT Scott Hahn donated.

View Link Trainer Restoration Navy Heritage Project VTU-0808G For the past 15 years we have been fortunate to have the tremendous support from NOSC Miami and VTU0808G. The members of this Navy Reservist Unit have been all constant and capable volunteers throughout this period. Without their help this Museum truly may not exist. We plan projects in anticipation of their presence, each 1st Sunday of the month. The amount of work accomplished on their visits has been significant. Their help and partnership with this Navy Heritage Project is vital for our Museum's future. View PROJECTS and PARTICIPANTS Thank you to longtime members and volunteers CAPT Scott Hahn and CAPT Stephen Schaffer from VTU-0808G, for their service and contributions to our Museum! Their Navy Heritage Project has been an important and valuable volunteer program benefiting the Naval Air Station Fort Lauderdale Museum-- and in turn our community.
News on the large hallway at the NASFL Museum:
This was a physically tough and exhausting project. In total 6 layers of flooring covered the original hardwood floor in the hallway of the historic Link Trainer Building. Each layer had to be carefully peeled, and hundreds of rusty nails removed. The large area had to be worked in small sections at a time. This hallway connects the library, office, restrooms, and exhibit rooms of the Museum. Richard Haddad led the project with help from volunteers John Bloom & Anthony Alberico. The bottom layer which was the most difficult to remove, was accomplished with the help of outstanding members of the Navy Reserve Captain Scott Hahn USN, Captain Bruce Fuchs USN, and CRD Rey Horta USN, who have been longtime supporters and volunteers of this Museum with Navy Heritage Project. We are grateful to all of them for their help and service. Our hope is to restore the hardwood to its original beauty. For now, the floor is temporarily covered with carpet squares donated by the Aiport. The second phase of this restoration project is currently taking place. Click on images to view larger NEW ! The CAPTAIN JOHN PAYNE MEMORIAL LIBRARY & RESEARCH CENTER
The storage room in the NE corner of the building was cleaned out, re-carpeted and painted, and new window treatments were provided by member Dorothy Riser. The project was led by Richard Haddad, with volunteers Ray Rivera, John Casey, John Bloom and Anthony Alberico, including Navy Reservists who moved all the bookshelves and books into this space to create our new Library/Research Center. This created space in the hallway, to include our Gift Shop! The large hallway is our next project, and will consist of removing old carpet to expose the original wood flooring— which will be restored. Thank you to the hardworking and wonderful volunteers from UNIT VTU 0808 G. These Navy Reserve Officers finished the Main Exhibit Room carpet installation at the NASFL Museum! Every piece of carpet was custom cut to fit around the perimeter of the room and posts. This required moving around a lot of things and working on hands and knees. The carpet was donated by Broward County Aviation Department and began to be installed last summer. The work was stopped for a while due to several other projects that were being tackled. On Sunday February 5th, the group arrived at 7:15am and spent the day at the Museum until the project was completed. What a privilege it is to work together with this capable and enthusiastic group!
Our deepest thanks go to CAPT. SCOTT HAHN, CAPT. MICHAEL McGEHEE, CDR. RICH SILVA, CDR. REY HORTA, CHIEF DEBORAH KRIEGER, JOHN BLOOM and JOHN CASEY. Main Exhibit Room Carpet Installation: The old carpet has all been removed, the floors are being repaired, and beautiful new carpet donated by the Airport is being installed by our volunteer members: Mike McGee, John Bloom, Rob Taylor, Karl Bork, John Casey and our youngest member Richard Jones, who served two tours of duty in Iraq; one aboard the USS George Washington Aircraft Carrier, and the other as a soldier in the U.S. Army. Helping with the work were also U.S Navy VTU 0808G members: MAC Patrick Bowden, CAPT. Scott Hahn, HM2 Richard McGowan, CAPT. Stephen Schaffer. Also member Rob Taylor is being generous in donating materials and his expertise for carpet installation. And thank you to Ray Rivera for helping in the maintenance of the Museum. |
